slowly realizing that I’ve befriended a real-life hawkeye and bj and that has me very happy

literally so many of the jokes in mash make more sense if u think hawkeye is queer like. at all times in the show we are meant to see the generals/bureaucrats as the butt of the joke, as the people we are making fun of; and the people who are actually affected by the war (especially minorities) as victims who are surviving despite the actions of those with more power than them. every time hawkeye adopts gay stereotypes, or propositions a general, or flirts w col. flagg, the original intention was obviously poking fun at gay men and hawkeye’s femininity, but that goes against the central concept of the show. if u see hawkeye’s queerness as genuine, then the humor comes from the fact that none of the straight people are picking up on it, or if they are, they’re doing a shit job of discouraging it. flagg calls him gay and his response is basically “yeah i am and u wanna fuck me so bad it makes u look stupid.” which is a joke that objectively makes more sense when it’s aimed at flagg rather than the abstract concept of gay men.
also they do This Exact Thing with hawkeye’s communism liberalism, and then keep conflating communism with queerness at any opportunity for eleven seasons straight.
